INTRODUCTION
I enjoy creating ceramic art and while I keenly learn techniques and processes, I am always seeking meanings in my work.
When the Wollemi Pine was discovered in 1994, it was found to be one of the oldest and rarest trees, with less than 100 adults known to exist in the wild. Eleven years later the first 292 cultivated trees were released through auction by Sotheby's. The astonishing speed at which an ancient species is brought to the modern world prompted me to create the 'meet the world, Wollemia Nobilis' collection; which depicts the effects of globalisation in our times. Scientific research on the Wollemi Pine in the wild has not discovered any genetic variation within and between the populations. I wonder if the cultivated ones will develop genetic variants as they are being planted into different parts of the planet. The amazing simple DNA in the primitive population comes to mind so often that I began making a 'one simple DNA' collection.
A teacher suggested I combine wheel throwing with the hand forming technique I developed (for the Wollemi Pine Series), to make functional ware. I like functional ware. One day I placed the white cups that sit on colourful bases onto a table top. Seeing the sun shining through a window lighted up the rims I was surprised and delighted. Ah, they are like waterlilies floating. Since then I admire Claude Monet's Waterlilies paintings, and his studies of light and the nympheas.
The sun with its light, the floral and the water, the surviving pine and the simple DNA, form the meanings in my work.  They tell me of a wonderful creator.
